At Northeastern Oklahoma Cancer Institute, our goal is to provide our patients with the superior cancer treatment and care that they deserve, from
the moment they walk in to our door for their first visit. Below we have provided more information on what you can expect from the first appointment
with us at our local cancer center in Claremore, OK.
Introduction & Planning
One of the key elements to creating an effective cancer treatment plan is basing it on the patient’s individual needs, which is why the first step in the process is having you fill out new patient forms to provide us with important information. You will need to fill out a “Patient History” form, as well as a “Notice Of Privacy Practices" form. You can print and complete these forms beforehand and bring them to your appointment to save time.
Next, you and any of your family members or caretakers will meet with your physician and our medical staff to begin discussing your treatment plan. We’ll go over the process of treatment and the potential outcomes that can be expected. We’ll review how your medical history, family history, and current state of health influences the planning of your treatment, and take time to answer any questions that you may have. We encourage you to ask any questions that you have, to ensure that you have all of the information you need.
Treatment Simulation Session
If you choose to move forward with your radiation treatment, we will then schedule an appointment for a treatment simulation. This session is used to measure your body and place markings on the skin where the radiation beams will be targeted during treatment. This is necessary to ensure that treatment is as precise and effective as possible.
During the simulation, our medical team will be by your side to guide you into the treatment room and ensure that you are comfortable on the table that you will be on during the actual treatment sessions. While some markings may be placed on the skin, you may also require a special device that we call an “immobilization device”, which is designed to keep you in place during treatment, since minor movements can move the precise beam off of the target treatment area. Immobilization devices differ on the type and location of treatment. Some examples of immobilization devices include molds, casts, headrests, or other items.
If necessary, we will take a Computed Tomography scan, more commonly known as a “CT Scan”. Using a combination of x-rays and a special computer software, we create a detailed, 3D image of your body, which will provide us with additional information that will help us in forming your treatment plan. We will also use this image in conjunction with our advanced treatment planning software, which will calculate the ideal positions, frequency, and doses that the radiation should be delivered to be the most effective.
Setting Up Your Next Appointment
Once we’ve finished with the first appointment, we will work with you to set up your next appointment so we can begin your treatment as soon as possible. Typically, treatment will be started within a few days of the first appointment.
